Fact of the Day
As discussed in the fact Subway Decibels, cities have been seeking alternatives to the all too noisy wheels-and-track. What propels a Maglev train are the electromagnets lined along the tracks. By changing the poles of these magnets in consecutive positions you can move the train by attracting it in the front and repelling it in the rear. Using the same principles, the train is suspended in the air and does not actually come into contact with the track; hence no noise. These types of trains can reach upwards of 250 mph. The trains were first introduced into to Asia and can now bee seen in Germany. New roller-coasters like New Jersey's famed Kingda Ka have utilized this technology for speed and thrill.
