Fact of the Day

More Information

The concept of the microwave for the purpose of food preparation was discovered by accident. Fiddling around with the magnetron (basic part of the microwave oven today) and electromagnetism in general, Dr. Percy Spencer noticed that a candy bar he had stored in his pocket melted within a certain proximity from the device. Originally thought of as a box to house radio waves, until a potential for speedy cooking in the American kitchen arised. Dr. Spencer did not waste the opportunity. The microwave exploded onto the scene in the 1950s, and the rest is history.
