Fact of the Day

More Information

In all, the reef encompasses 14 square miles of ocean. Over 3000 reefs and coral islands add to the complex structure of the Great Barrier Reef. It lies off of the northeastern coast of Australia.
Reefs requires shallow water sunlight to survive because the coral lives from photosynthesis (using the sunlight, oxygen, and carbon dioxide to create energy). Some of the most vibrant colors in the world can be seen on coral. 13% of the world's coral lie in the Great Barrier Reef.
