Fact of the Day

More Information

Preparation for such a festival begins much before the traditional five day feast of St. Joseph. St. Joseph is the patron saint of Valencia. Sometimes as much as six months beforehand, artists and craftsmen get to work on the ninots (cardboard, wood, and plastic satirical statues). These pieces of art are made to symbolize creation and are all burned to represent death by fire on March 19th; traditionally, La Crema. Even the pyrotechnics world refers to the festival as the Night of Fire. The statues are displayed and burned in 370 locations around the city. Each year one statue is saved from the bunch by popular vote and placed in a museum to house such wining entries. Watch Video Footage
The festival can be traced back to pagan roots before the Roman conquest of the area. Also, during the celebrations, bouquets of roses are walked to a shrine of the virgin Mary.
