Fact of the Day More Information This law, San Francisco's Opium Den Ordinance, is what pushed the American War on Drugs into motion. To this day, the war waged with the passing of this law is still being fought. At the time (circa 1875) the California State Supreme Court claimed that they could not regulate private usage but only public distribution, they added that otherwise they would be acting immorally. The major cause for the bill was the anti-Chinese sentiment sweeping the increasingly less and less wild west.
