Fact of the Day More Information During the Roman empire, the Roman roads were world renowned conduits of goods and information. It was common for gossip to be associated with these roads and more specifically the intersections. If messages were to be passed across long distances, the crossroads would sure be the place to do it. Literally, tri via means thee roads in Latin and still in modern Italian.
Once it was well known that gossipers were quite effective at the checkpoints, people started hanging signs. These signs soon evolved into bulletin boards. As bulletin boards get full the information becomes more and more trivial. This is exactly why the word trivial holds that meaning today.
Besides a brief meaning as the three paths to follow in Medieval education, trivia has meant details, gossip, and common knowledge. View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
