Fact of the Day More Information Unlike Japanese features, the Ainu have deep-set eyes and hairy bodies. They also have a facial structure similar to that of the Native Americans. Uncommon for the region, Ainu can be seen sporting thick, heavy beards.
These people have suffered discrimination and oppression from the Japanese,
who didn't admit to the world that the Ainu existed until the 1990s [source]. Most of the culture has been lost and the race itself is slowly fading away. Most remaining Ainu inhabit Hokkaido Island in Northern Japan. You can see the it on the map in the fact on the Sakhalin Island oil rig: Refined Russian Oil. Hakkaido is the northernmost yellow island (below Sakhalin itself). Sakhalin is said to still have some Ainu inhabitants as well. View All Facts View Images View Maps Blog
